How To Get Lucky

Intro Music:
Welcome to An Owner’s Guide for Your Life, the podcast that combines psychology, coaching, common sense and fun. I’m Tracey Browning, an entrepreneur, life coach, and lover of people. Now let’s talk about how to live love, make money and change the world.

Tracey:
Hey, I’m glad you’re here. This is episode 21, and I’m going to talk to you about how to get lucky. When I told my husband what I was going to talk about, he gave me this look like ,”You really want to talk about that?” And I gave him a look like, “Yeah, I think I got some good info.” And then we both just kind of shrugged our shoulders and nodded our heads and went on with our business.

So here we are.

Now I know you’ve heard it, and you’ve probably even said it. “She is so lucky.”
You see somebody get something great-maybe it’s a promotion at work or a prize, or they buy a new house. I don’t know. Whatever it is, we see it. And we’ve got this little twinge of envy, and we think they’re so lucky, like it all came down to chance.

But does it? Does it come down to chance?
And if it does, how much can we influence chance?

Now I like this definition. Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. Seneca was a Roman philosopher, and I’ve kind of got this thing for Roman philosophers, apparently. But Seneca said that and I like it. It makes a lot of sense to me, and I want to talk more about it.

I’m going to tell you how to get lucky. And, you know, you may be chuckling and thinking, get lucky, like in the bedroom sense. And I’m kind of giggling over it, too. If that’s the scenario in your head, enjoy yourself. But I’m talking about getting lucky in life in the general sense.

Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.
And I see this play out every day with my dogs.

So I’m going to tell you five things my dogs do to get lucky.
And you can do them, too.

Now the first thing is they know what they want.
There are a few things in life that Diesel and Mozzi want. They want food, they want water, they want companionship and an occasional ball. But what they really love is to be petted. Head rubs, a good scratch behind their ears, pats on the head, rub under the chin=- ah, that’s the stuff. They know exactly what their goal is. They know what they want.

The second thing they do, they’re watching for the chance to get what they want.
Now my husband and I work from home, and Diesel and Mozzi are inside dogs. So we’re all together in our space all day, every day, and they don’t ignore us. They pay a lot of attention to us. Yeah, they nap a lot, but they hang out in our space and they watch us. They check in to see what we’re doing, and they’re always looking to see if it looks like maybe we’re ready to scratch their noggin, always watching.

Now, the third thing they do, they put themselves physically in the right place.
They’re not barking at us from across the room. Hey, come rub my ears. Though sometimes it happens, and I wonder if that’s what they’re saying and I’m just not getting the message. But I don’t think that’s what it is. No, they come up to us. I might be sitting there working at my desk in my office and they’ll wander in and just come over and kind of bump up against me to check in, or they pop up in front of me when I’m sitting on the couch. Mozzi especially, he’s a really tall golden doodle. He is a master at walking beside you with his head right under your hand. So you pretty much like you have to rub his head. He puts himself right there at your hand, which is great.

Now, the fourth thing they do, they ask for it.
No, they don’t use words, no, but it’s obvious what they want. They nudge. They stare. They come with their head on the arm of the chair, and they just gaze at us soulfully with their eyes. They want to catch our attention. So we give them some love. There’s no mistaking what they want, and they’re not shy about asking. Now we don’t always do what they want, but it ain’t for lack of trying on their part. They always ask for what they want.

And the fifth thing they do, they make it so easy for us.
It’s really simple for us to pet them. Diesel and Mozzi have done all the hard work. They’ve done the set up for us. We’re not having to jump through hoops to pet them. We get the reward of physical contact with pets that we love. Usually, petting them is very soothing. And most of the time, it’s easier for us to give them what they want than to NOT do it. Just like when Mozzi is walking up beside us with his head in our hand.

So they know what they want. They watch for the chance to get it. They put themselves physically in place. They ask for what they want, and they make it easy for us to give them what they want.

There you have it, friends. Five tips from my dogs for you to use so you can get lucky.
